Dirk Van Unnik

Vice President of Tax Development

Dirk Van Unnik, FourQ’s Vice President of Tax Development, helps multinational businesses solve complex tax and operational issues with business realities and processes in mind.  He is a clear thinker whose creativity is limited only by an unyielding professional integrity. Dirk provides hands-on expertise in direct tax, indirect tax, and customs matters, gleaned from building and managing diverse tax teams across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America in a range of sectors. Dirk’s international experience in consulting, healthcare, cable, automotive, and assorted technical industries comes from living and working in multiple countries abroad. For more than a decade he served as the worldwide tax leader of shared services centralization and expat management at GE. There and in leadership roles at Tesla, UPC (now Vodaphone), Boehringer Mannheim (now Roche Diagnostics), and Coopers & Lybrand (now PwC), he has been the lead contact for government, directed the tax and legal structures of rapid new country roll-outs, and developed and implemented a corporate cost charge-out IT system across 60+ countries. He’s led teams focused on VAT, customs, and transfer pricing. He also has managed tax matters related to centralizing services like finance, HR, sourcing, and real estate services, including automated cost recharge mechanisms of $28 billion+, as well as due diligence and post-acquisition restructuring related to mergers and acquisitions.

Dirk brings powerful curiosity to his work, listening intently so he can dig beneath the surface to find his clients’ true concerns. His depth and breadth of experience means he knows and understands their pain points. He then diagnoses how to marry cutting edge technology and tax strategies to create opportunities.

Dirk earned a Master of Science in Business Economics, Accounting & Finance and a Master of Law (LLM) in Business Law from Erasmus University Rotterdam. Since 2009, he has served as a Central Bank-approved Board Member of the General Electric Netherlands Pension Fund, a prudentially regulated separate foundation managing EUR 500m of assets. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee. Dirk speaks English, Dutch, German, Spanish, and French.

Dirk enjoys spending time outdoors. He is an enthusiastic golfer and tennis player, and his passion is scuba diving. While he generally prefers warm water, Dirk’s dream is to dive in Iceland at the Silfra site, where the tectonic plates of the North American and Eurasian continents meet.
